SiriusXM Skipped The Streaming Wars. Turns Out That Was The Smart Move.

Everybody else jumped into the pool. SiriusXM just stood on the deck and watched.

While Netflix, Disney, Peacock, and half of Hollywood spent the last decade pouring billions into streaming video, SiriusXM did something that looked, at the time, almost stubborn. It stayed in its lane. Satellite radio. Audio. The thing it already knew how to do.

Now the results are in, and the company's podcast ad revenue is up 20%. Not video subscriptions. Not a new streaming app nobody asked for. Podcasts.

I find that fascinating, and here's why.

The Gold Rush Everyone Joined

For years, the business advice in media was simple: if you're not streaming video, you're dying. Every legacy company felt pressure to build its own Netflix. Billions got spent on content libraries, bidding wars, and apps that mostly duplicated what already existed. A lot of that money is still being written off today.

SiriusXM looked at that stampede and asked a different question. Not "how do we compete with Netflix," but "what do we already do better than anyone else?"

That's a question I ask myself constantly, and not just about business. I've been living full-time on the road since 2017, and almost every piece of advice I got early on assumed I should follow the standard path: settle somewhere, build the predictable life, chase what everyone else chases. I skipped that gold rush too. Turns out there's usually more than one way to win.

Why Podcasts, Why Now

Think about where people actually listen to audio these days. It's not just in a living room. It's in cars, on long drives, on flights, while walking a dog or packing a bag for the next trip. Podcasts fit into that moving, in-between part of life better than almost any other medium.

SiriusXM already owns a chunk of that world. It's the voice coming through the dashboard on road trips across the country. Add podcasts to that mix, and you're not fighting Netflix for eyeballs on a couch. You're fighting for ears that are already captive, already moving, already looking for something good to listen to for the next three hours.

That's not a small market. Anyone who's driven across Nebraska, or Texas, or the empty stretches of Highway 50 in Nevada, knows exactly how much audio content it takes to fill that kind of silence. I've logged thousands of those miles myself. A good podcast is sometimes the only thing standing between you and talking to yourself out loud at mile marker 212.

The Lesson Buried In The Numbers

A 20% jump in podcast ad revenue isn't flashy the way a streaming subscriber number is. Wall Street loves big, dramatic growth charts. But steady, compounding growth in a category you already understand? That's often more durable than chasing the next shiny thing.

It raises a question worth asking in any business, or honestly any life decision: just because everyone else is running toward something, does that mean you should too?

SiriusXM didn't need to beat Netflix at Netflix's game. It needed to be excellent at something Netflix doesn't do, and double down there.

I think about that a lot when people ask me why I didn't build the conventional retirement, the house with the fence, the predictable schedule most people assume comes with being almost 70. Why chase someone else's version of the gold rush when there's a different trail that actually fits who you are?

So What Does This Mean For You?

Maybe you're not running a media company. But you've probably felt that same pressure, the sense that there's one "right" path and everyone else is already on it. SiriusXM's bet says otherwise.

Sometimes the smartest move isn't joining the rush. It's asking what you already do well, and building from there.

Next time you're on a long drive, flip on a podcast instead of the usual playlist. See what you discover. You might find, like SiriusXM did, that the road less crowded is exactly where the opportunity was waiting.
