In this video, we'll compare the two best podcasting microphones for beginners - the Samson Q2U and the ATR2100x.

3x Criteria For Narrowing Down Our Choices

1. Dynamic vs Condenser

Dynamic microphones with cardioid polar patterns (or pickup patterns) are ideally suited for home recording (which is where most podcasters record their episodes).

Condenser microphones are more sensitive, pick up a lot of background noise, and are only useful in professional recording studios.

For that reason, we don't recommend the Blue Yeti USB microphone (which is a USB condenser microphone).

2. Under $100

While more expensive podcasting microphones can make your podcast sound amazing, you don't need to break the bank to get high-quality audio recordings. In fact, you don't have to spend more than $100!

There are some great, low price options in the beginner podcast price range.

That's why microphones like the Rode Procaster, Shure SM7B, and Heil PR40, should be considered investments for later down the road in your podcasting journey.

We also can't recommend the Audio-Technica ATR2100 anymore, seeing as it's been discontinued and replaced with the ATR2100x (more on that in a minute).

3. Plug And Play

When looking at entry-level podcast microphones, ease of use is critically important. You should be able to plug the microphone directly into your computer without needing a bunch of extra gear.

For that reason, Rode Podmic is also out of the running. It's an XLR only microphone, so you'd also need to purchase an XLR cable and audio interface to record with it and that pushes the budget over $100.

That leaves us with just two options - the Samson Q2U and the Audio-Technica ATR2100x.
